Day 8 – Choosing Your Adventure
The Challenge: Go out and do something that you’ve wanted to do for a long time.
Write about how you can make such adventures part of your new lifestyle
Let me be honest right up front about this challenge. I’m a day late, I didn’t “go out” to do it, and while it was something I needed to do, I definitely did not want to do it.
You’ll see why in just a moment.
The day of this challenge is a very busy day for me. By the time we get home after church the closest thing to “adventure” is seeing if we can reach the bed before we drop. So, I decided to postpone. As tonight and my ideas for an adventure waned, I began to worry I would have to postpone another day. Then, as I glanced over at my desk despondently, I realized what my adventure would be:
Yes. It’s true – this is where I ‘write’. The breeding ground of creativity and… who knows what else. It looks really bad in this picture because… well, because it is bad. I usually just set things to one side or the other and leave myself a small workspace.
On Wednesday was a webinar put on by Michael Hyatt entitled “13 Productivity Myths That Are Actually Making You Less Productive”. In it he mentioned that clutter makes you less productive.
I set myself a task and made it the only thing I worked on (multitasking is also counter-productive). In what has been a growing monster of a mess for weeks, the desk was cleared in less than 30 minutes.
My desk is so clean and uncluttered now, you could eat off of it.
Now, how does this factor into my lifestyle? My freedom plan does not include “Spend your time digging through junk to find what you need”. In fact, I plan on using my laptop more and my desktop for larger projects. If home-base isn’t taken care of, then how can my mind be free to focus on the right things?
There you have it. My wonderful adventure in desk disinfecting and disaster recovery.
